This page describes what information they gather, how we use it and why we sometimes need to store these cookies. We will also share how you can prevent these cookies from being stored however this may downgrade or 'break' certain elements of the sites functionality.

Definitions, characteristics and application of the legislation

Cookies are small text files that are sent onto the user’s computer or mobile device by the websites the user visits. They are sent back to the website at the user’s next visit. Cookies allow websites to remember their users’ actions and preferences (for example their log-in information, favorite language, font size, and other visualization preferences) without having to enter their preferences again when the users come back onto said website, or navigate from one page to another on the same portal. Cookies are therefore used for electronic authentication, session monitoring and to memorize information on the activities of users that access a determined website, and may contain a unique ID code allowing them to monitor users’ navigation history on the portal to generate statistics or improve targeted advertisement. While navigating on a website, cookies from other websites or web servers may be saved on the user’s computer or mobile device – those cookies are called “third party cookies”. Some operations are not possible without cookies, that are in some case technically essential for a website to work.

There are different kinds of cookies, their characteristics and roles vary as well as the amount of time they are stored on the user’s computer or mobile device – e.g. session cookies (automatically erased when the browser is closed), or persistent cookies (that remain on the user’s device until a pre-determined deadline).

According to the current legislation in Italy, the use of cookies is not always subject to the user’s consent. Consent is not necessary for so-called “technical cookies” – cookies used to send communications on a digital communication network, or the ones that are necessary to provide a service explicitly requested by the user. In other words, these cookies are essential for the website to work or to provide activities requested by the user.

The Italian personal data protection authority (called the Garante) considers the following types of cookies as “technical cookies” for which the user’s express consent is not necessary:

  • “analytics cookies” when they are directly used by the site operator to collect information in aggregated form on the number of users and how the users access/visit the website,
  • Navigation cookies or session cookies (for authentication),
  • Functionality cookies. They allow the user to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (e.g. language, products added to a cart) in order to improve the service provided to the user.

The so-called “profiling cookies” are the ones used to create a user profile and/or to send advertising contents that follow the preferences shown by the user during navigation; the user’s explicit consent is necessary for those cookies.
